What is IVR?

IVR means Interactive Voice Response. It is a technology that allows a person to interact with an automated telephone system; the system detects their phone keypad input and/or their voice. A simple example of an IVR system is:

  • A person calls the phone number of a large supermarket chain.
  • An automated voice asks them to punch in their postcode using their keypad; the IVR will use this to ascertain what suburb the user lives in.
  • After punching it in, the voice asks them to press #1 to hear the latest specials in their area, #2 if they want to learn the location of their nearest supermarket branch or #3 if they want to be automatically connected to that branch.
  • They choose their preferred option and the IVR takes care of the rest.
